PCL at a Glance for March 23, 2021

Inspirational Thought: When I go to Israel we always walk the first parade route that Jesus took on that first Palm Sunday entrance into Jerusalem. Today it is much different than in Jesus’ day, but deep inside each soul, one can still capture the excitement of what it must have been like. You can get a sense of the throngs praising and shouting Hosanna – which means save, I pray – at the top of their voices. The entrance into Jerusalem was through the Golden Gate, which would have led Jesus to the temple. The masses were waving palm fronds as a symbol to the Roman soldiers, “Go home, this is our King who has come to save us from the Roman rule.” The religious leaders scoffed at this sight. I can imagine that they even tried to quiet the crowd – but it was useless. As told in scripture, “If my people remain quiet, the stones will shout out.” There is no keeping silent when Jesus came to town. However, the people wanted something different than Jesus was willing to give.

Jesus was about liberation

Jesus was about kingdom building

Jesus was about peace

But, look at the cues with which Jesus gave and this tells us what he was about. Jesus arrived in Jerusalem mounted on a donkey – a symbol of peace. Jesus is about kingdom building, but it is of the heart. Jesus is about restoration and reconciliation.

May our Palm Sunday celebration bring the same tension as when Jesus rode into Jerusalem, and may it lead us looking toward the cross, from where, comes our liberation from sin.

Until we meet again, may God’s love be with you,

Pastor Dan

Prayer of the Week: Lead on, O King eternal, till sin’s fierce war shall cease, and holiness shall whisper the sweet amen of peace; for not with swords loud clashing, nor roll of stirring drums; with deeds of love and mercy the heavenly kingdom comes. Amen.

(taken from the hymn, “Lead On, O King Eternal,” stanza 2)
